Frank Zappa 200 Motels 50th Anniversary Edition
200 Motels by Frank Zappa is the cinematic collision between the two kaleidoscopic worlds, the musical and the visual one, of the musician-composer; Zappa reunites his band, The Mothers, with Ringo Starr, Keith Moon, Pamela Des Barres, Theodore Bikel, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and an incredible variety of characters (both on and off screen) for a "surrealist documentary" about the bizarre life of a traveling musician.
The soundtrack is an anarchic pastiche of avant-garde rock and orchestral compositions interspersed with dialogues from the film. The band in the film and soundtrack consists of Frank Zappa (guitar and bass), Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan (vocals), Ian Underwood (keyboards and winds), Aynsley Dunbar (drums), George Duke (keyboards and trombone), Martin Lickert (bass), Jimmy Carl Black (vocals) and Ruth Underwood (percussion), not to mention the aforementioned Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
For the 50th anniversary comes the Super Deluxe six-disc box set of the soundtrack produced by Ahmet Zappa and Zappa Vaultmeister Joe Travers; the '200 Motels 50th Anniversary Edition' combines the original soundtrack, remastered by Bernie Grundman, with an incredible amount of unreleased and rare material from the Zappian archives, including original demos, studio outtakes, work mixes, interviews and film commercials, unpublished dialogues.
The packaging replicates the original booklet updated with new liner notes by Pamela Des Barres, Ruth Underwood and Joe Travers, in addition to the bio-record notes by Patrick Pending, and is enriched with artwork, images from the film and stills, many of which unpublished. It also includes some exclusive gadgets: the "200 Motels" key ring, the "Do-No-Disturb motel door hanger" and a life-size replica of the original movie poster. The audio was meticulously selected and digitally transferred by Travers who created a new high resolution 96K / 24B stereo master from the original analog tapes. The material was then mastered for the release of the various editions by John Polito in 2021.
