Leonard Bernstein - Beethoven Complete Piano Concertos No.1-5 DVD
Christian Zimmermann and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Leonard Bernstein return with a DVD set of Beethoven's piano concertos, acclaimed for their masterful recording. This combination was also released last month with the set of Brahms piano concertos. Bernstein wasn't necessarily enthusiastic about working with Zimmermann at first, but the two hit it off and ended up completing a recording of all the concerts of Beethoven and Brahms, two composers who are the essence of German music. The three musicians, Zimmermann's exquisite piano playing, Bernstein's engaging conducting, and the Vienna Philharmonic's exquisite tone and brilliant singing, combine to produce a performance of overwhelming virtuosity. Zimmermann's delicacy at the beginning of no. 4 and the dynamic and scaled n. 5 are worth listening to, as are the nos. 1 and 2, played by Zimmermann himself due to Bernstein's sudden death. As in the case of Brahms, the director of the video is Humphrey Burton.
