Henry Purcell - Dido and Aeneas - Box set - Book + CD
Among the great composers of Baroque music, there is little biographical information about Henry Purcell. His own work plunged into obscurity for a long time and was rediscovered only in the twentieth century, helping to give new vigor to the British compositional school.
Purcell tried his hand at both plays in the nascent genre of opera and instrumental compositions. In his songs he incorporates Italian and French stylistic elements, and creates a particular style of English Baroque music.
Having an enormous talent, he had the honor of composing music for birthday anniversaries, and finally for the funeral of Queen Mary II (this work was reworked by Wendy Carlos for the soundtrack of Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange with the title Beethoviana). The Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary consists of a march, a song and a hymn for choir and orchestra and was performed on the occasion of the funeral of Queen Mary in 1695, and partly at the funeral ceremony of the composer himself.
In his career he has also composed 42 duets and over 100 songs, hymns and odes. Many of these were written for the deep bass voice, which is known for its cavernous timbre. For a long time he was mistakenly attributed to the composition of the trumpet tune The Prince of Denmark's March actually written by Jeremiah Clarke, his contemporary composer and collaborator of his younger brother Daniel.
Purcell is one of the baroque composers who have had a direct influence on modern English composers such as Benjamin Britten, Tavener, Nyman and even today's rock musicians such as Pete Townshend of the Who have been inspired by his masterpieces.
