Amir, son of one of the most influential Pashtun men in Kabul, and Hassan, his little Hazara servant, are inseparable, sharing the passion for kite racing. But a tragic event bursts and upsets their lives: Amir secretly witnesses the violence suffered by his young playmate from a group of thugs. When the Soviet troops invade his country, the child is forced to flee to the United States with his father Baba but the sense of guilt for not having helped his little friend will never abandon him. In the United States he grows up, graduates, knows Soraya, the woman who will become his wife, and publishes his first book, crowning the dream of becoming a writer. When one day he receives an unexpected call at his home in San Francisco, Amir realizes that the time has come to remedy his mistakes. Rahim Khan, an old friend of Baba's, begs him to return to his country: Sohrab, Hassan's son needs his help.
