Oscar Peterson Jazz in Paris CD
One of the great things about jazz is the cross-pollination of different players in multiple settings.
No one would have thought of combining the violinist Swing Stéphane Grappelli and the bop pianist Oscar Peterson, for example, but the game works very well. The pair has expanded into a quartet on this reissue with the help of bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and drummer Kenny Clarke.
The set, recorded in 1973 in Paris, includes a handful of standards, from "Them There Eyes" by Pinkard / Tracey / Tauber to "Thou Swell" by Rodgers & Hart. As you can imagine, Grappelli is in his own element on fluctuating and fluctuating pieces like "Makin 'Whoopee" and "Walkin' My Baby Back Home".
In the same way, Peterson joins the spirit of these pieces, making them the most interesting interpretations of the album. Other materials, such as the persistent "Flamingo" and "My One and Only Love", are also enjoyable, but in comparison they seem rather lukewarm.
This last composition is also hampered by its length of almost ten minutes.
Peterson and Grappelli end with a beautiful "Thou Swell" version that brings the whole relationship to a satisfying conclusion.
Quartet, vol. 1 is not a perfect recording, but it's fun, showing how fun it is to pair improbable musicians in the studio and see what happens.
