At the end of 1972, after the release of the album "UT" in November, the split of the New Trolls into two parts was sanctioned. Nico Di Palo (vocals and guitar), Gianni Belleno (drums), Maurizio Salvi (keyboards) and Frank Laugelli (bass) stay together to prepare a new record, while Vittorio De Scalzi continues with other musicians. Neither party will be able to use the name New Trolls for their own projects. With a large and mysterious question mark filling the black cover, the four musicians release the album "Canti D'Innocenza Canti d'Experience" (1973), which it is attributed only to their names, Nico, Gianni, Frank, Maurizio. Immediately after Belleno then leaves the group, replaced by former Atomic Rooster Rick Parnell, the project is called Ibis and records "Sun Supreme" (1974).
In an attempt to free themselves from the cages that the song formula imposes, the Ibises try to propose a genre free from preconceptions and launch themselves into long compositions. , where they show great technique and a surprising courage in seeking new solutions.
With the album "Ibis" published by Polydor in 1975, the parable of this musical project ends, leaving a splendid trace in the Italian pop music of the seventies. This time Nico Di Palo and his companions bring their attention back to song form, in particular with the song "Passa il tempo" where a strong tendency to choral lyrics emerges and where Di Palo emphasizes his vocal range as a soloist.
Of course, the Pop Prog trend with a rock cut is not lacking and emerges forcefully with "Premessa" and "Ritrovarci qui", but there is also much more like the Jazz references of "Strada", the heartfelt tribute to the queen of Blues of that period (“Dedicated to Janis Joplin”) and the influences of American rock of the '70s that can be heard in the irresistible closure of “Keep on Movin'”.
