Set in the second half of the 11th century, during the period of the Spanish Reconquista, the novel tells the story of Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, the leader who participated in the reconquest of the territories of the Iberian Peninsula which ended up in the hands of the Islamic caliphate of al-Ándalus.
The narrator is Diego de Ubierna, Rodrigo's faithful squire, who tells in the first person the life and deeds of El Cid, a few years after his death.
The work opens with the meeting between the two. In 1063, Rodrigo is now officially invested with the position of knight of the army of King Ferdinand I. He is looking for a squire. On the advice of Diego's father, whom he met at court, he goes to the monastery of San Paolo di Cardeña where the boy is cared for and raised to become a priest since the age of eight. Diego leaves the monastery and becomes the faithful and humble servant of the lord of Vivar.
Thus begins the story of a legend ... Between furious battles, court intrigues, betrayals and alliances, Rodrigo's fame grows, his fame is so booming that poems and songs on the exploits of the so-called Campeador echo throughout the kingdom up to when, after years of struggle, his figure will shine even beyond the borders of Spain.
A prominent author, Corral, born in 1957, is a teacher of medieval history at the University of Zaragoza. He is the founder and president of the Aragonese Writers' Association. He has written about thirty volumes including books, essays and historical novels.
