For the first time ever, the historic Halloween concerts on October 31st and the closing show on November 1st recorded at the Palladium in 1981 will be released in a single six-disc box set featuring 78 previously unreleased live songs for a total of more than seven hours of show which include the three complete concerts. Available October 2 via Zappa Records / Universal Music, the release follows the series of box sets that began in 2017 with the Halloween 77 box set. The costume box will include a Count Frankula mask along with a red and black cape to give way to the fans of dressing up for Halloween as the vampire Frank Zappa.
The release includes a 40-page booklet with rare photos from the event by John Livzey and new liner notes from original band member Robert Martin, Vaultmeister Joe Travers and Gary Titone, a super fan at the event who remembers the shows . Additionally, a single CD version, “Halloween 81: Highlights From The Palladium, New York City” will also be released featuring selected songs from the three shows which will also contain an exclusive song, “Strictly Genteel,” from the November 1st show not included in the box set. The packaging will be in a jewel case with notes by Joe Travers.
Zappa showed up at the Palladium at the head of a new band with three new musicians - Scott Thunes on bass, Chad Wackerman on drums and Robert Martin on keyboards - along with veterans Ray White on guitar, Ed Mann on percussion, Tommy Mars on keyboards and the Little Italian Virtuoso Steve Vai, on his second tour as a member of the band.
From the roar of the audience at the start of the first show with "Chunga's Revenge" which opens CD 1, to the closing notes of "The Torture Never Stops" on CD 6 which concludes the November 1st show, the spirit and enthusiasm are palpable during the more than seven hours of performances in which Zappa leads his band through three eclectic concerts. Having released his new album “You Are What You Is” in September of that year, the setlist is a showcase of many of the songs from that double LP as well as Zappa classics such as “Black Napkins,” “Strictly Genteel,” Dancin' Fool", “Bobby Brown Goes Down" and "King Kong". Zappa and Vai's guitar skill is a river in flood during concerts in songs such as "The Black Page # 2", "Easy Meat" and " Stevie's Spanking." Other highlights include the band's incredible version of the Allman Brothers Band's "Whipping Post" and other highlights such as "Drowning Witch" and "Sinister Footwear II."
