Rokia Koné & Jacknife Lee Bamanan Digipack CD
It's a voice that soars - pure, clear and true - above bass and synths, traditional percussion and infectious Mande guitar grooves. A voice stopped in its tracks immediately familiar to anyone in Mali, West Africa: Rokia Koné, aka the Rose of Bamako. On his international debut, he collaborated with Irish-born Californian rock producer Jacknife Lee who reinvented the Malian sound.
BAMANAN is a collaboration that connects the great ancient kingdoms of Mali and the vibrant modern street life of its capital, Bamako, to a remote recording studio nestled in California's Topanga Canyon where deep tradition and innovation have come together.
One of Mali's most beloved and dynamic artists, Rokia Koné is a force to be reckoned with. His gripping performances in the city's Mediterranean scrub venues very often last hours, as Koné runs the gamut of emotions from joy to desperation, from fury to tenderness, brandishing that stunning voice with grace and power. In 2016 she joined the feminist supergroup Les Amazones d'Afrique and debuted on an international stage alongside artists such as Oumou Sangaré, Angélique Kidjo and Kandia Kouyaté.
Jacknife Lee is the acclaimed producer of bands including U2, R.E.M and The Killers: he earned a Grammy for Taylor Swift's album Red. Despite specializing in large productions in BAMANAN Lee champions the pure beauty of Rokia's voice with intelligence and sensitivity. Every nuance and breath is heard, every inflection and melismatic improvisation is carefully preserved in this stirring debut.
