"Heavy Load Blues" is Gov't Mule's first all-blues album, although, explains leader, guitarist and singer Warren Haynes, it's been "on my bucket list for years." "Every now and then," adds Haynes, "we play a little traditional blues on stage, and while it's usually just a few songs per show, our approach to the genre is unique and relies on the collective chemistry we generate as a band. With this album, we wanted to stay true to the spirit of the traditional blues. 'Heavy Load Blues' is not a blues/rock record, it's a blues record. We wanted it to sound different than a normal Gov't Mule record." The thirteen songs included in the collection are a well-balanced mix of original compositions by Haynes and classics of the genre taken from the repertoire of Bobby "Blue" Bland, Howlin' Wolf, Elmore James, Junior Wells and Ann Peebles as well as the Animals and Tom Waits.
