ON SUNSET is Paul Weller's 15th solo album, a soul album full of classic pop songs, ballads and orchestral openings and at the same time a work full of experimentalism and electronica; On Sunset is also an album where Weller looks back and at the same time projects himself towards his sound of the next decade. On Sunset began to take shape when Weller was completing the previous True Meanings record in the spring of 2018, with the song "Mirror Ball".
"I was thinking of using 'Mirror Ball' as a bside - said Weller - but listening to it thoroughly I thought it could be the starting point for a new album, and it did." While True Meanings, was more acoustic, with extensive use of arrangements by Hannah Peel (the Irish composer who wrote the music for Game Of Thrones), On Sunset sees Weller integrate these orchestrations into a more band oriented setting; Hannah Peel still collaborates, but this time the inspiration comes from the jazz of Roy Ayers and the arrangements of the legendary Lalo Schifrin. This is why On Sunset is Weller's most soulful album since the Style Council days, with the lessons of traditional soul singers like Bobby Womack and Bobby Blue Bland in mind and more modern ones like Pharrell Williams. Weller takes care of much of the instrumentation accompanied by his band members, Steve Cradock (guitar), Andy Crofts (bass), Tom Van Heel (keyboards), Steve Pilgrim (drums and guitar) and Ben Gordelier (percussion).
Around them many guests: the indie trio of Watford The Staves on vocals, the old companion of adventures in the Style Council Mick Talbot who plays the Hammond in a couple of songs and the saxophonist of Madness, Lee Thompson, who is added in "Walkin '". "More" sees the participation of the French singer Julie Gros (Le Superhomard), in "Equanimity" there is even a solo violin by Jim Lea (SLADE, who remembers them ???), precisely because Weller was a lover singles by the British glam-rock band and finally the modern R&B of “Earth Beat” has American teenage singer Col3trane as a guest.
