L.I.T.A.N.I.E.S Written by Nick Cave Nicholas Lens Vinyl
Nick Cave, legendary singer-songwriter and frontman of the Bad Seeds, has written 12 "litanies" as a libretto for a new chamber opera by Belgian composer Nicholas Lens.
Lens describes L.I.T.A.N.I.E.S as "a pure form of poetry ... a lyrical form of minimalism that could lead to a state of trance."
The idea of the work was conceived during the lockdown: the silence, the reigning peace, the contact with nature during the walks, brought back Lens's visit to the Zen temple of Runzai in Japan. A feeling shared by Nick Cave who immediately agreed to make the booklet by writing 12 litanies "which are religious supplications" comments Cave "and I realized that I have written litanies all my life".
Due to the lockdown, the 11 musicians of the L.I.T.A.N.I.E.S ensemble recorded their parts separately at Nicholas Lens's home. The daughter of the composer Clara-Lane joined the group playing the keyboards, helping the production and singing some vocal parts.
With L.I.T.A.N.I.E.S Lens continues to cultivate a renewed approach to composition by collaborating with dynamic and celebrated writers outside the opera world for the creation of librettos. His previous works include Slow Man (2012), with Nobel Prize winner and Booker J.M. Coetzee, and Shell Shock (2014), again with Nick Cave.
