1984 George Orwell

"The eyes also followed you of the coin. On coins, stamps, book covers, banners, posters and cigarette pack paper. Everywhere. Always the eyes looking at you and the voice enveloping you. In your sleep. or awake, working or eating, inside or outside, in the bathroom or in the bed: there was no escape. Nothing was yours except those few cubic centimeters inside your skull. "
Written in 1948 and published the following year, 1984 portrays an imaginary future in which totalitarianism, falsification, the cancellation of individual identity and the loss of historical memory, vitiated and corrupted by the media, dominate. The story is set in a London located in one of the three great superstates into which the world is divided: Oceania.
The other two, Eurasia and Estasia, complete the picture of the police states that dominate the land in perennial conflict.
As in the most subtle wars, the resulting tensions are exploited to keep social structures intact and to give the illusion that the primary purpose is the protection of citizens. To this are worth the sacrifices of the fighters, who sacrifice themselves to preserve the welfare of society.
In the state of Oceania, the dominant ideology is Socing, that is, "English Socialism", represented at the top of the system by Big Brother, an almost legendary figure that no one has ever seen, except in the posters that cover the city. That of 1984 is a reality in which the will is totally annihilated and humanity seems to survive only in the protagonist Winston, perhaps the last of his kind. In this context, a big question arises for the reader: when the individual no longer exists, and no one is more certain of the authenticity of their thoughts, is it still possible to distinguish the lie from the truth?
