Orff Carmina Burana CD
Carmina burana is a scenic cantata composed by Carl Orff between 1935 and 1936, and is based on 24 poems among those found in the medieval collection of the same name, the work of goliards and clerici vagantes.
The full title is "Carmina burana: Cantiones profanae cantoribus et choris, comitantibus instrumentis atque imaginibus magicis".
This cantata belongs to the theatrical triptych by Orff Trionfi, which, composed in different periods, also includes the Catulli Carmina (1943) and the Triumph of Aphrodite (1953).
It was performed for the first time on June 8, 1937 in Frankfurt am Main, while the Italian premiere was held on October 10, 1942 at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan.
The Prologue consists of a series of reproaches against fate, which governs the destiny of men according to its own whim.
The first part celebrates the happy aspect of spring.
In the second part, passages in Old High German appear.
The third part includes passages inspired by the unruly life of clerici vagantes, gambling, good drinking and good eating.
In the fourth part there are passages that praise sensual love.
The Fifth part marks the conclusion of the previous part.
The ending that repeats the initial song.
