Plot:
During the war, the English colonel Nicholson, who is with his regiment in Burma, obeying a higher order, surrenders with his men to the Japanese, and is sent with his family to a prison camp lost in the jungle, commanded by Colonel Saito. He, having had the order to have a bridge over the Kway river built within a set time limit, would like to use not only the captive English soldiers but also the officers for manual work. This is opposed by Nicholson and a conflict broke out between the two colonels, during which the Japanese resorted to inhuman measures of coercion in an attempt to induce Nicholson to yield. He manages to resist because he considers his moral obligation to set an example for his men. As he failed, the Japanese changed tactics and asked Nicholson for his cooperation in building the bridge. Nicholson then wants to take advantage of the circumstance to demonstrate to the Japanese, who despises, the superiority of the British also in the construction of bridges. Thanks to the ascendancy that he deserved among the soldiers, he involves them so much that even the soldiers hospitalized in the infirmary work. Nicholson believes with this to make a high and heroic effort and has a wooden plaque affixed over time to witness the authors of the work of English engineering. He is so caught up in the success of his work that he does not realize that he is working with his enemies in a work that only benefits their interests. In fact, on the day of the inauguration, an English assault patrol arrives - led by an American prisoner who managed to escape and therefore knew the territory - with the order to blow up the bridge to prevent the transit of troops and enemy materials. Nicholson, in his infatuation, tries to prevent the destruction of his work but nothing can do anymore and he falls killed, while the bridge, mined by the raiders, leaps into the air.
