Molière Il Malato Immaginario
It is curious to think how the world we live in manages to persuade us that we are the only one possible, with its time, its habits and its laws.
- Il Malato Immaginario Molière Plot
Synopsis: The imaginary patient is a comedy-ballet. It is divided into three acts and three interludes. It was first performed in February 1673 at the Palais-Royal with music by Marc-Antoine Charpentier and choreography by Pierre Beauchamp.
The subject of medicine was very much in vogue at the time given the scientific advances. So the text is a satire aimed mainly at the figure of the doctor, considered a stingy, dangerous and pedantic being with his refined language.
Throughout the comedy there is comedy with puns and allusions, with disguises and funny gestures, with misunderstandings and with bizarre characters.
However, there is a note of bitterness: Argan has only one disease, hypochondria, and is obsessed with death which he tries to counter with the illusion that medicine can get the better of nature.
