José Lloréns Sea of Fire Novel
Barcelona, year 1069. Martí Barbany, the humble farmer who came to the city to seek his fortune, has now become a prosperous shipowner and one of the most prominent figures in the entire county. His life runs smoothly until the tragic death of his beloved wife Ruth and the child she was carrying in her womb. It is an unbearable pain, to which Martí tries to react by concentrating his love and attention on his only daughter Marta and on business, directing the flourishing trade of his fleet with a firm hand. But the misfortunes never seem to end.
The terrible threat looms over him represented by a shady character who has arrived in Catalan land and is animated by a single, iron will: to settle an old account that has remained unresolved with Martí. Meanwhile, the clash for the succession to the city government between the angry Pedro Ramon, eldest son of Count Ramon Berenguer I, and the twins sons of Almodis de la Marca, his last wife, creates moments of great tension that could change the fate of the county.
Forced to leave for a long journey, Martí decides to entrust his daughter to the care of Countess Almodis, his protector. It will be precisely between the cold walls of the palace, where betrayal, greed and lust reign, that the young Marta will discover the dark side of nobility and the sufferings of an impossible love that will confront her with the rigid customs of her time and with the fate of his family.
